Day 5 Traquair to St Mary’s Loch – about 12 miles

This was another short and easy day in warm sunshine, the SUW climbing steadily through pastures from Kirkhouse (picture above) onto the broad expanses of Blake Muir. A host of sponsored walkers greeted me cheerily as they headed for Selkirk on their annual fund-raiser in aid of a cancer charity.

Looking back towards Traquair and Innerleithen.

Descending through forest, I caught a glimpse of St Mary’s Loch and sat on a bench to air my feet. The Halifax chapter of mountain bikers arrived, jocularly eager to evict me from my spot, and we exchanged banter in a very West Riding way. We were to meet again in the bar that evening.

By early afternoon I reached Tibbie Shiels Inn, my overnight stop. The location between two small lochs is idyllic. I spent a few peaceful afternoon relaxing in perfect weather. Such happy idleness!
